I’m Mario Canales III, an 18-year-old senior at Tomball High School and the current Speech & Debate President.

Speech and debate helped me become a stronger writer, a clearer speaker, and a better student. It also helped me build confidence for interviews, scholarship applications, and college conversations.

For newer students, I think the biggest skills are:

• Speaking clearly under pressure
• Organizing thoughts before talking
• Writing stronger arguments
• Listening closely
• Handling disagreement respectfully
• Building confidence through practice

My background is mainly in CX policy debate. I’ve been a UIL 6A State Finalist, UIL 6A State Semifinalist, NSDA Nationals qualifier, 2x TFA State qualifier, and 5x UIL State qualifier.

I also earned scholarship opportunities through TILF, Kentucky Debate, Wake Forest Debate, and UTSA.

I’m always happy to talk with students or parents who are curious about speech, debate, public speaking, or how to get started.

Public speaking and debate advice for newer students

I’m Mario Canales III, an 18-year-old senior at Tomball High School and the current Speech & Debate President.

For students starting out, the biggest things that helped me were:

• Practicing speeches out loud, not just writing them
• Recording speeches and fixing pacing, clarity, and filler words
• Learning how to organize arguments before trying to sound impressive
• Doing short rebuttal drills under time pressure
• Getting comfortable being uncomfortable in front of people
• Treating losses as feedback, not failure

My debate background:

• UIL 6A State Finalist, 2nd place
• UIL 6A State Semifinalist, 3rd place
• NSDA Nationals Policy Qualifier
• 2x TFA State Qualifier
• 5x UIL State Debate Qualifier
• 4-year debate camp attendee
• Helped first-year debaters qualify to TFA State and advance to UIL State

For newer debaters, especially in CX, I think the most important skills are flowing, extending evidence clearly, knowing your case, and explaining why your argument matters to the judge.

Happy to answer questions from students or parents about public speaking, CX debate, tournament prep, or getting started in speech and debate.
