I used to think Hand Foot & Mouth Disease was one of those “wee kid illnesses” that meant a couple of spots, a temperature, and maybe some Calpol.

No... No no no.

As a fully grown adult man, let me tell you: HFMD has humbled me in ways I didn’t think medically possible.

It started innocent enough. Slight sore throat. Felt a bit rundown. Thought, “Ah sure, probably just tired.”

Fast forward 48 hours and I’m sitting in the kitchen afraid of orange juice, chocolate, and pasta because apparently my throat has been replaced with an open volcano.

Then came the hands. Tiny blisters at first. “That’s weird.”

Now my fingers look like I lost a fight with a nettle bush and my feet feel like I’ve been walking on Lego dipped in acid. Sitting hurts because somehow I’ve got spots in places no human being should ever get spots.

The cruelest part? Everyone says: “Oh kids usually handle it fine.”

Brilliant. Absolutely delighted for them.

Meanwhile I’m Googling: “Can adults survive Hand Foot & Mouth Disease” while eating ice lollies like they’re prescription medication.

The genuinely serious bit: If your kids get HFMD and you start feeling unwell — do not underestimate it. Adults absolutely can get hit hard with it. Especially the throat pain. Mine went from “bit annoying” to “medieval punishment” overnight.

Current survival kit:

Ice lollies

Cold drinks

Painkillers

Regret

Questioning every life choice that led me here

Also shout out to dads everywhere who continue parenting while feeling like a burnt corpse.

0/10. Would not recommend.

TL;DR: Thought Hand, foot, and mouth disease was a mild kids illness. Turns out in adults it feels like swallowing glass while walking on burning Lego whilst covered in blisters. Kids bounce back in 2 days while you question your survival. Ice lollies are medicine
