After rediscovering video games and finally getting around to playing Red Dead in the last few years, i have fallen in love with this game. It holds a special place in my heart, and I’ve never felt so at home in a virtual world. I have had no complaints. Until now…
Playing as John in the epilogue, the only thing I really wanted to do after completing the game was take boats around the waterways of Red Dead.
And what I’ve found is a really frustrating game mechanism, which is such a shame given how absolutely stunning the developers have made the rivers and lakes and falls.
- there’s a lack of boats anywhere other than Flat Iron lake (I think)
- John drowns so quickly the margin of error is tiny
- the boats randomly sink even if I’m nowhere near the borders of the game and avoid “currents” that seem designed to sink the boat
- I can’t row past Thieves Landing toward New Austin even though I’ve cleared it of gang members
- really difficult to figure out which directions the good currents (eg not the ones that are designed as mechanism to sink the boat)
All I want to do is row up/down the San Luis river in New Austin and admire the immense canyons and scenery. I’d also love to row down from the mountains in to Flat Iron etc etc.
Any tips/help would be really appreciated! Dont want to hate this element of the game but have found it the only frustrating thing so far…
