Things I underestimated before doing home renovations myself

How uneven old houses are.

Nothing is square. Nothing is level. Nothing lines up with anything. Every ‘simple’ project turns into measuring 14 times, shimming things, and wondering what the previous owner was thinking.

You watch renovation videos online and everything looks clean and straightforward. Then you open one wall in a real older house and suddenly your entire weekend plan is gone.

I’m looking at your work and have no idea what you actually did. Was this fully yours? Just lighting? One asset? Part of a larger team?

If I have to guess your contribution, I move on. There are too many portfolios to spend time figuring it out.

Just label your work clearly. What you owned, what tools you used, and what was shared. It matters more than people think.
