My boyfriend and I keep having an argument about his dad, which is keeping us from moving forward in our relationship. His dad is very condescending and talks down to me when we’re around, which I have expressed to my bf about the uncomfortableness it causes me. For example; we recently moved out of state and his parents aren’t too happy about it because we aren’t married yet. When we went back to visit in November for Thanksgiving, his dad pulled my bf to another room and told him he has a guy that he could put my bf in connection with for a job in Texas if he wanted it, basically implying to leave me and go back to Texas. It bothers me because my bf did not stick up to his dad saying he wanted to stay with me and he’s happy where he’s at. There’s other things his dad has said, in front of the two of us that have made me feel this way. I understand he’s his dad, but I don’t understand the God complex he has for him.
My bf insists I need to try and have a relationship with him and that he needs to be as important to me than he is for him. Is it bad for me to say that as long as i’m respectful to him and nice when he’s around, I shouldn’t be expected to do any more??? TIA
