Can’t seem to figure how to change this dimmer to 3 way switch(or even if I need a 3 way).

Prior to removing the old dimmer I used a voltage meter and confirmed the black is always hot, red is hot when the lamp is on. The white is a neutral? But also goes to the lamp. I do see the white and black wires are separately pigtailed to a group wires.

On the new switch I tried putting the white to the common black screw, and the black and red to the brass screws but the switch keeps tripping.

Can someone help advise?
