I live in California, and I need advice on how to handle a situation with my landlord. My roommates and I have been making our monthly rent payments on time, but noticed an unexpected $800 balance in February. We've been trying to resolve this with our landlords since then, but they have not provided a clear explanation.
Recently, they claimed we owe $4,200 in back rent, despite us having documentation proving each payment. They are now threatening us with a 3-day eviction notice if we don't resolve the issue within 24 hours. The landlords have also singled me out, accusing me of not paying rent, causing me to leave work to gather bank documentation as proof of my payments.
Additionally, we were sent the landlords' rent ledgers, which were extremely disorganized, lacking clear labels of who made what payment. We have tracked and demonstrated that the amount they claim we owe was incorrect. We responded within the 24-hour timeframe to prove this, but now have not been able to resolve it through calls, texts, or emails as they are not responding.
What steps should I take to address this false accusation and potential eviction effectively
