Hi all, I've been struggling with how long SOAP notes take after a full day of consults, and I thought I would share something that has helped me in case anyone else struggles with this too.
I spent some time working through it last week, and here's a simple way I cut my end-of-day documentation time in half for less than $10/m:
- After each consult, open your phone's voice memo app and spend 60 seconds dictating the key points out loud; history, findings, assessment, plan. Don't worry about format, just talk.
- At the end of your shift, upload the recordings to Otter.ai (free plan covers this). It transcribes everything automatically.
- Copy the transcription into Claude.ai (free tier) with this prompt: "Format this into a clean SOAP note for a veterinary medical record. Keep clinical language, fix any dictation errors."
- Review, adjust, paste into your practice management software. Done.
Hope this helps someone 🙏
