I’m probably going to get absolutely dragged for my set up, but this was a casual attempt to grow from some randomly collected seeds, so don’t judge too hard!

Some notes:
- All of these were germed at the same time
- They’re on a 18/6 light cycle, home compost and garden soil mix, watered when the top inch of the soil is dry, fertilized with blood meal every 3-4th ish time I’ve watered or if I notice things starting to yellow
- They were started in like mid February? So, maybe in the 70-80 days old range. I wrote the start date down somewhere and then lost it.
- I didn’t get my light and timer set up until they were probably about 6” tall, kept them too far away from said light for probably about 2 weeks before I learned about PPFD and how to test it, prior to that I just used cheap grow lights and turned them on/off manually at about a 14/10 as I could manage
- I topped them within days of each other when they had 4-5 nodes, depending on their nodes and height, and were all relatively the same height at the time (besides shorty #4 who’s always seemed a bit stunted)
- Had a fungus gnat infestation at one point, dealt with it pretty early and we’re all good now
- I only have one good quality light, so I used books stacked to keep the canopy the same height after topping

The growth has been so varied and each one seems to be at a different stage so I guess I’m just looking for some opinions on what’s going on and advice for each if you’re feeling generous, what I could do better next time (besides the obvious individual grow tent set up for each and better early management), and advice on how getting at least something of a harvest for the efforts I’ve put in!

More details on each:
#1 - TALLLL lady, almost every leaf has only 3 besides a handful that have 4-5, just started showing sex in the last couple of days
#2 - My early gal, showed sex before anybody about 3-4 weeks ago, kinda bushy but almost every leaf is just 3, concerned she’s starting to flower with how many pistils I’m seeing even though she’s had the same light as everyone else. Just did a second topping on one branch that was taller than anything in the room for some reason.
#3 Another tall lady, started showing sex last week, lost quite a few bottom fan leaves to low nitrogen (I think) before I noticed
#4 My shorty who’s still not showing sex, always been short and extra bushy with tight node spacing, almost all leaves are 5, some even 7 now, had to defoliate here and there
#5 My final lady who’s kind of a combo of everyone else—showed sex late last week, kinda bushy, leaves 3-5

Appreciate any amount of time you can give to helping a newbie out!

Hello all! I’m trying to refinish a bookshelf as a gift for my sister-in-law’s nursery, but I want to make sure I do it right.

My idea is to get a cheap-ish piece off of marketplace and refinish it with some handpainted details, but I had a few questions.

  1. I know to avoid mdf and particle board obviously, and I’m confident in my ability to spot it, but am I able to refinish plywood if that’s what I run into underneath paint? I built my son’s giraffe shaped bookshelf out of plywood years ago, but I just painted the whole thing after sanding. (Included a pic of it just for funsies, it’s in MUCH worse shape now after 6 years of a rough and tumble boy lol.)

  2. If I don’t decide to stain it, should I do the hand painted elements on the raw wood before sealing, or paint after sealing and then seal the hand painted details again? And I’m assuming water based finishes are going to be the best route considering the handpainted details?

  3. Are acrylics okay for the hand painting? Or is that a cardinal sin on furniture?

  4. Being that it’s going into a nursery, are there any products I should avoid for concerns of off-gassing or accidental ingestion by a teething toddler?

Below is the piece I’m currently looking at as a possibility, it’s not in my possession. (They’re asking $40 for it.) From the rounded edges and dark wood peeking out below the paint chipping, I’m thinking it’s solid wood, and that’s what the seller says it is. My plan is to use CitriStrip to get the paint off, then decide whether or not to stain or just seal the raw wood when I get to what’s underneath. I’ve included a mock up of what I’m going for as the finished product. Wood color will depend on what’s under the paint, this is just a rough idea. (Please forgive the AI generated image, I really don’t feel like taking an hour drawing out an exact mock-up myself just for this post!)

All input is appreciated!
