What substrat is everyone growing their Alocasia in?

Alocasia is the genus of plant I struggle the most with. I was never able to keep them alive in my usual chunky aroid mix.

I then discovered semi-hydro and thought a constant supply of water could resolve the issues i was having. At first I was happy because nothing was rotting or completely drying out anymore. But I started to realise that nothing was thriving either. I struggle to grow more than one leaf at a time. And when that one leaf inevitably dies I end up with a stump sitting in PON for months doing absolutely nothing. I'm also not getting substantially root growth. I don't have this issue growing other genus in PON.

I've seen a couple of posts online where people are converting Alocasia back into soil. Clearly PON isn’t working for me so something has to change.

Any advice? If I go back to a potting mix what components would you recommend and in what ratios? I make a water retentive mix for my calathea and begonia with coco coir, perlite, vermiculite and tree fern fibre. Would this work?
