Changing hvac filter when I noticed some of the roof wood is splintering… attic is a bit humid (ATL) but when I pealed back the wood that splintered I don’t see any moisture or water. Is this simply wood checking? Should I replace?

Is this a serious issue ? Should I open it up and see what’s going on Feels a little soft , do I need to replace the drywall? On the other side there was a crack in the brick which I have used motor to fill it I suspect that’s how water is coming in
