Posting this on an alt account to stay private, but here is the context of the story.
So, I have two friends — let’s call them Cam and Julia (not their real names). They were boyfriend and girlfriend. I met Julia through work in 2022, and we became friends. Around a month later, I got a message from Cam on Instagram inviting me to Julia’s birthday party. We all got along really well and became very close friends.
A few months ago, things went south. They got into an argument and decided to take a break. Julia told me she was going to break up with him, and I told both of them that if they did break up, I would still stay friends with both of them and would not choose sides, since they were both my friends. They both agreed. Eventually, they did break up, and I continued talking to both of them. I also helped them get their stuff back from each other because it was a messy breakup. I heard stories from both sides, but I still decided to stay neutral. Things were going okay for the next couple of weeks.
Julia’s birthday was coming up soon, so I wanted to throw her a surprise party. However, she read me like a book and figured it out after I asked if she had plans for her birthday. She asked me not to do it because she was not in the right mental space due to the breakup, and I respected her decision.
After that, I started noticing Julia acting differently. We used to text every single day, but after the breakup, she would constantly tell me about all the bad things her ex did. It felt like she was trying to make me dislike him, but I really couldn’t choose a side because both of them had done horrible things to each other. After that, it turned into blaming all men. As a man myself, I understand that a lot of men do horrible things, but it still felt uncomfortable.
It turns out she was giving me hints that, because I’m a man, she wanted space. I didn’t understand it at first because she never communicated it clearly and only gave indirect hints.
After I went on vacation, I wanted to bring gifts back for both Julia and Cam. Julia is the type of person who gets you gifts for every holiday, birthday, or even if you’re having a bad day, even though I told her multiple times that she didn’t have to.
When I came back from vacation, I texted Julia and told her I was back and asked when would be a good time to meet up so I could give her the gift. But I got the response shown in the image. After three years of friendship, I really didn’t expect it to end like this. All I wanted was to stay friends with both of them, but she made me feel like I was a horrible friend.
