Update: I received a low health score warning for one of my caches after a single DNF. Thought?
Confused, I wrote to HQ, asking for an explanation. Was this a bug? Could the system be flawed?
HQ’s first reply was vague: "Each cache has a health score, calculated using a number of logs and circumstances. We don’t share the exact way the score is calculated because we’re still improving it. We’d rather encourage extra cache maintenance than risk a cache not getting the care it needs."
So, I pressed further. I asked if a single DNF enough to trigger a low health score? Has the system been tested for false positives in regions with fewer finders? Could this be escalated to the team working on the algorithm?
Their final answer? A cold, impersonal: “The heath score is currently working as intended. HQ as well as the global geocaching volunteer reviewer team continue to monitor it.”
No clarity. No accountability. Just a system that seems to prioritise appearances over fairness. They “would rather encourage extra cache maintenance than risk a cache not getting the care it needs” from their comfy airconed office. We need to check a cache due to single DNF, WOW just WOW.
If HQ’s tools don’t account for nuances, it risks punishing COs for factors outside their control. Thoughts?
Edit: seems like the solution for a fake low health score is just to respond accordingly. Fair game is fair game.
