Genuine question for juniors regarding the hostel situation at IIIT Nagpur:

Would you prefer the current system where hostel allocation depends on who pays fees first — or a structured system like IIIT Lucknow where all first years stay outside but second year onward students get hostel accommodation?

Right now the current system is honestly becoming a 10-second competition. The hostel gets filled almost immediately after payment opens, and students are forced to sit with laptops/cards/UPI ready just to secure a room. Even then, there is no guarantee.

Under the current model, it is genuinely possible that a student may not get hostel in 1st year, 2nd year, or even 3rd year depending on timing and seat availability. That creates uncertainty every single year instead of stability.

At least in a structured model:

  • everyone knows the policy beforehand
  • students can plan PG/flats in advance
  • seniors get stability during internships/projects/placement prep
  • allocation stops depending on internet speed and payment timing

Some people argue that first years staying outside would reduce senior-junior interaction. But realistically, most interaction already happens through clubs, hackathons, projects, classes, sports, coding culture, and events — not just because students stay in the same building.

Also, after the recent protests, new hostel construction is expected to start within the next 6 months or possibly even earlier. So this would not be a permanent situation anyway. The goal is simply to create a more stable and fair system until infrastructure catches up.

Wanted honest opinions from juniors on which system seems more practical and fair long-term.

IIIT Nagpur students are currently protesting against the conditions in the off-campus hostels managed by Dia Hospitality, and honestly, this is a much bigger issue than just one college.

Students are paying fees to study at an institute of national importance, yet they're being forced to live in conditions where:

Washrooms are rarely cleaned

Food and drinking water quality is terrible

Maintenance complaints are ignored for days

Students face daily travel and safety issues because of off-campus accommodation

What makes it worse is that students have reportedly been raising these concerns repeatedly, but the management response has been silence, delays, or complete negligence.

There are also growing concerns among students about possible corruption and influence. Many students believe the hostel management has connections with the administration, which is why these issues continue despite repeated complaints. Whether true or not, the lack of accountability and action has created deep frustration among students.

Last year, even the transport bus used for students reportedly met with an accident. Thankfully no one was seriously injured, but it raised serious concerns about student safety and how casually these problems are being handled.

This is the reality of corruption and accountability failure in India. On paper, institutions grow, budgets are sanctioned, projects are announced - but students still struggle for basic living conditions. The system keeps running because students are expected to "adjust".

The saddest part is that this is happening during end-sem exams, when students should be focused on academics instead of fighting for clean washrooms, safe accommodation, edible food, and basic safety.

Students aren't asking for luxury. They're asking for dignity.

Authorities need to take responsibility instead of outsourcing student welfare to careless private hostel managements with zero accountability.

Hope the administration listens before things get even worse.
