I purchased a Vivo x300 Ultra from JD via one of Vivo's official store. I chose to buy from there because they offered free shipping and no added price from the retail price.

Unfortunately, the device I got was a defect. When the screen brightness is set to minimum, a bright green line was visible at the center of the screen. This was a hardware defect, not software.

So I immediately filed return with the proof.

JD first had me talk with Vivo-the seller. I showed Vivo the proof and told them I would like a refund and they said okay. Then JD was cool with return. This was Vivo's only involvement in my return procedure.

Things seemed smooth until this discovery. It is extremely hard for an individual to ship used electronics with batteries TO China because of Chinese law. And unlike when JD shipped the phone, me returning it required tons of paperwork. I am an individual and my defect Vivo x300 Ultra already turned into a used device when I opened the box.

JD initially had unacceptable response; have me or someone take the defect device to China personally and ship it from a post office in China and they will offer additional 100 Yuan (approx. USD $14.6 ) coupon. This offer was utterly ridiculous so I insisted on full refund without return or they should come up with a realistic refund option. They did. They prepared a specialized courier service in South Korea (where I am based) and had me ship the device to there, and would refund once they check the device was not missing at there. So I sent the device to the warehouse and sent the photo of the receipt to JD customer service.

I asked about the shipping fee I paid to ship my defect device to the warehouse, and 10% VAT I paid to import Vivo x300 Ultra. JD said they can't wire me money directly.

They paid the shipping fee (approx $5 USD) to JD coupon. VAT (approx $135) was initially sent to JD wallet. It's something like Paypal-ish service they have so technically right person with right credentials could withdraw the money as cash, but since I don't have any Chinese bank account, I couldn't access the money so I asked them to give VAT in JD coupons too. They didn't confirm but I felt like some Chinese law was making wiring money to outside of China very tedious, but the refunding of the phone itself was an exception as it was cancellation of transaction.

Then it took more days until I got the money back for the item wired to my bank account. This wasn't on JD because the first week of May was full of public holiday and weekend in South Korea so very few business days passed.

I also bought a phone case for Vivo x300 Ultra, but I can't really return this because the case itself has no defect, so I would have to pay the shipping fee but that would make returning pointless. So unopened box of Vivo x300 Ultra case lies in a corner of my room.

JD may have different policies on shipping address depending on where you live.
