Mike Smith RMV Era Gear Enthusiasts
Hey gearheads,
Making this thread for anyone obsessed with Mike Smith’s Results May Vary era guitar gear.
I’ve been trying to track down:
- what happened to the actual guitars Mike used during the RMV
- PRS models he was using back then
- amps, cabs, tunings, pickups, effects, etc.
- rare backstage/studio photos of his rigs
- any info from interviews, techs, producers, or people who saw the gear in person
I know a lot of old photos disappeared from the internet, so if anyone has archived pics, stories, screenshots, or knowledge from that era, please share them here.
Would be awesome to make this the main discussion thread for Mike Smith gear history.
Probably all of the PRS guitars were ordered before Mike officially joined the band. The red and orange burst ones seemed to be custom-built by PRS for Limp Bizkit / Fred Durst around the RMV era, while the grey/black guitar looked more like a standard Custom 24.
I actually found a pretty similar-looking one on eBay recently, though it was a 2007 model, so obviously not the exact guitar.
There were also a black PRS and some other finished but not used much.
Also there was a Gibson SG used on Eat You Alive music video.
I also remember Lethal mentioning that Mike may have taken some or all of the guitars with him at one point and allegedly tried selling them on eBay. No idea how true that is and honestly I’m not trying to get into drama, I’m way more interested in the history of the instruments themselves.
Mike also still got his Telecaster, he used that on recording Evolver album in 2011, Tony the guy who owns the studio where Evolver album was recorded confirmed Mike was using his Tele back then, I don't think PRS guitars were used in that record.
What’s fascinating is that the red PRS eventually resurfaced on Reverb and was listed as a 2002 custom build for Fred. That makes me incredibly curious about what happened to the iconic orange burst and the grey/black PRS, because those are probably the most recognizable guitars from the Mike Smith era. If you got any info and you're healthy obsessed with gear, or maybe you own one of these guitars, let's play detectives here.
