The theory of Achan

In Season 4 Episode 3, Sophia said to Kenny:

"in the story, achan caused the whole nation of israel to suffer because he offended god"

This refers to the story of Achan from Joshua 7 in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament).

After the fall of Jericho, God commanded the Israelites that all spoils were devoted either for destruction or for God’s treasury. Nothing was supposed to be taken for personal use.

However, a man named Achan from the tribe of Judah secretly took some items for himself (a Babylonian robe, 200 shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold) and hid them under his tent. This was considered a betrayal of the entire covenant community, not just a personal sin.

Now here’s my theory:

At the beginning, when the townspeople performed the ritual of sacrificing their children to gain immortality and made some kind of deal with an entity (possibly MIY), Tabitha and Jade’s original reincarnations may have interfered and ruined the ritual.

Because of that:

  • The other townspeople were cursed to become monsters, forced to live forever.
  • And Tabitha and Jade became the “Achan” figures of the story — cursed to return to this place in every lifetime to fix what they caused.

So maybe the town’s suffering exists because the ritual was interrupted, not because it succeeded.

I know a lot of people have suggested parts of this theory before, but I’m trying to connect the pieces together:

  1. The monsters only appear at night. It almost feels like they’re not just hunting—they’re guarding something.

  2. What if the talismans don’t actually work? Maybe the monsters are just pretending to be affected by them so people stay inside at night. That would mean the “rules” are being controlled.

  3. The monsters don’t run… except once. Normally they walk slowly, but when Miranda was about to reach the tower, Smiley suddenly ran toward her.

    • Why break the pattern at that moment?
    • Also, why did Miranda go at night? Couldn’t she have waited until morning?
  4. The tower + “tears” theory When Boyd and Sara were close to the tower, it was evening and it started raining. What if:

    • The “tears” are actually this rain
    • And the lake only forms at night because of it?
