The things our parents say sometimes really baffles me, and pisses me off occasionally (this being one of those times). So I just graduated from pharmacy school and my godfather sent me some money a couple days ago. My mom told me this when I was talking to her earlier this morning.

She says that I should call him and thank him for sending me money as congratulations. Cool. No issues there, that’s doable. It’s what she said after that really got me:

“And make sure to apologize for not telling him about you graduating.”

Umm…What? Apologize for fucking what? Let me first say I have no problem with my godfather. It’s just that I’ve only seen him in person on less than five occasions, and talked on the phone less than 10 times throughout my life. But now I’m obligated to apologize.

This is the shit I can’t stand about the culture and how we have to always acknowledge elders or ‘the village’. Especially when ‘the village’ has contributed literally nothing to my growth. On top of a lot of them being very antagonistic to both my parents, while simultaneously looking for handouts from the both of them. I’ll never agree with or accept this part of the culture.
