Make sure your transporter carries both cargo and liability insurance by asking for a certificate of insurance. Review it carefully—it should list the company name, trucks, VINs, and authorized drivers.

Last year, a transport company caused a minor but noticeable scratch on my car, which had just been repainted a few months earlier. They ignored my requests for repair reimbursement (only a few hundred dollars). I later learned their policy only covered liability—meaning damage from an accident involving their truck. My vehicle was classified as cargo, which would have required cargo insurance, and that portion of their policy had lapsed. My own auto insurance also did not cover damage during transport.

If the damage had been more serious, I would have had no coverage at all.

Since then, I’ve switched to an auto insurance provider that includes coverage during shipping. I also call the transporter’s insurance company directly to confirm their policy is active and includes cargo coverage.
