I’m hoping this is the right sub, if not please redirect me because I’m concerned!

Me and my fiancé recently moved in with her parents to pay off some debt. They have a gas stove/oven. They keep plastic containers of donuts and stuff on top of the stove. I used the oven to make dinner and the plastic container on top of the stove melted. Is this normal? I’ve never had a gas oven but it seems dangerous that enough heat is coming out of the back to melt a plastic container. I’m worried there’s a fire risk.
