Synthetic rubies can be grown by several methods: flame（Verneuli） fusion, Czochralski , and temperature gradient method （TGM）. Figure 2 shows a crystal grown by the TGM method. The transparent part at the bottom is a colorless sapphire seed crystal, which turns red by adding chromium ions.
