I really do not love this subway tile fireplace in our house... second pic is what I would love for it to look like, but I don't think I can afford to have someone redo it and don't know if that's something could do myself.. 🫠

what are some options for DIY with this if any? Or other ideas that aren't stone that might make it less stark/feel cozier?
