I used to think sensitivity to indigo was something rare that a person either had or didn't, but now that I've read about people developing it seemingly out of nowhere after having no problems initially, I'm reconsidering using indigo. I would just hate to find a process and color that works for me, only to suddenly have to stop and be forced into an awkward grow-out. Permanent chemical dyes to me seem even more dangerous and direct dyes aren't ideal for long term. I'm interested to hear any thoughts and especially personal experiences with this. I'm also wondering if someone with a mild sensitivity might still be able to use indigo with certain precautions, but it's unclear to me whether it's the inhalation or contact with skin that triggers the symptoms, or both. Someone might also get a migraine from the smell without necessarily having a sensitivity to the mold itself. I understand it's rare and I'd most likely be fine, but indigo especially is such a commitment that I would appreciate hearing some opinions on this.

My hair is an ashy medium brown that I'm trying to color a warm dark brown or even a warm black. I did tests on hair from a brush, with 1 part henna and 2 parts indigo (henna dye released for 6 hours with black tea, indigo mixed and immediately added to the henna, mix applied to hair for 3 hours) and after oxidizing the result is more like a dark grey with a little bit of brown. There's no warm highlights even in the sun, just grey...? I'm happy with the darkness of the color, I just wish it was warmer! Any ideas on what to try for my next test?
