Now, imagine for a second if such a tragedy had happened in Italy and many young Swiss people had lost their lives. How would you have commented on the building code violations in the heart of a wealthy tourist resort? The years of failed inspections? The cover-ups? The investigative blunders, like the failure to seize a phone as evidence? I can only imagine the outcry.

Perhaps you should understand that the problem isn't your efficiency—which I won't judge based on this single tragic episode—but the systemic condescension that I hope you will learn to restrain. It transpires in everything, even when you say, 'Only the Italians are attacking us, not the French or Germans.' The truth is, you only consider the French and Germans 'worthy' of criticizing you. Because we are Italians. In your eyes, we are inferior.

I even read a Spanish journalist in El País writing that 'Italy has lost football, and football is sometimes the only thing an Italian has left.' The only thing? I could list 200 other things, my Spanish friend.

Is Italian football in crisis? Yes. And I hope this blow is the catalyst to rebuild and improve. I’m confident things will change, especially seeing the great results of our U20 and U17 teams (and our success across all other sports lately).

Spare us your lessons. They are nothing more than the projection of people who couldn't wait to point their fingers and try to humiliate us

Pur non essendo un fenomeno ha vinto 2 scudetti ed una champions trovandosi nella Juve e nel Milan vincenti. Unpopular opinion part 2: Italy has been “trash” over the last 20 years except euro 2020 .

A lot of people say Italy has been in serious decline, especially after 2020, and use that as proof that Italian football is “finished.”

That narrative doesn’t really hold up if you look at the full picture.

Yes — at the World Cup level, it has been a disaster. No debate there.

But if we look at the other major international competition, which is also extremely difficult to win — the European Championship — Italy’s record over the last 20 years is actually very strong:

• 2008 → Quarter-finals
• 2012 → Final (excellent tournament, lost to Spain)
• 2016 → Quarter-finals (knocked out on penalties vs Germany after a strong run)
• 2020 → Champions
• 2024 → Round of 16

Now compare that with other “top” European nations over the same period — Spain, France, Germany, England, Netherlands.

The only team that has clearly performed better than Italy at the Euros is Spain.

That would realistically make Italy the second-best performing team in Europe at the Euros over the last 20 years, despite what many narratives suggest.

Of course, this doesn’t mean there are no problems. There clearly are. In my view, this is one of Italy’s worst cycles historically, similar to Spain in the 80s or France in the early 90s.

But I think it’s important to separate problems from exaggeration.

The story that Italy is some kind of “global disaster” doesn’t really match the actual results.

A lot of the criticism comes from two extremes:

• Rival fans mocking Italy (understandable, especially after missing three World Cups)
• Italian fans overreacting and falling into self-pity

The reality is more complex. The missed World Cups weren’t just about decline — they also came from avoidable mistakes, bad luck, and some questionable rules and qualifying formats.

What’s needed is less emotional reaction and more rational analysis of what is actually going wrong.

Mi spiego, leggo molti discorsi semplicistici di gente che dice che non ci siamo qualificati perchè siamo scarsi. Ma c'è un dato obiettivo. L'Italia è dodicesima nel ranking, i giocatori dell'Italia per la gran parte giocano in grandi squadre e vengono pagati dieci di volte di più di quelli della Bosnia. Una differenza di valore sulla carta abissale.

Insomma nessuna opinione, stando ai valori, può giustificare il fatto di prendere 7 gol in 2 partite contro la Norvegia, per quanto la Norvegia sia forte, o di beccare 4 gol da Israele o di soffrire con la Bosnia.

Quindi due sono le cose, o l'allenatore è scarso e ha schierato male la squadra, oppure molti di questi giocatori che non saranno come Lamal ma sulla carta sarebbero in teoria buoni, non lo sono affatto.

Secondo me sono vere entrambe le cose

1. Assumere Gattuso è stato un errore gigantesco. Per la Nazionale ci vuole un allenatore top e invece noi abbiamo preso uno scarsone che ha sempre fallito, un allenatore da serie B.

E non mi venite a dire che anche gli altri hanno fallito con l'Italia. L'Europeo dell'Italia con Conte è stato ottimo, Mancini ha vinto un Europeo e la partita con la Macedonia è stata molto sfigata, peraltro dopo che l'Italia era arrivata seconda nel girone dopo l'Inghilterra avendola pure battuta una volta. Ma onestamente, voi ce lo vedete Conte che perde 4-1 in casa con la Norvegia o che prende 4 gol da Israele ? Io no. E' vero Spalletti ha fallito con l'Italia perchè voleva esportare il suo gioco contorto e fantasioso e non ci è riuscito. Ma l'allenatore conta eccome, e per risollevarci ci serve un Conte o un Ranieri, uno top e quando lo abbiamo avuto anche pochi anni fa abbiamo fatto abbastanza bene.

2. Secondo me è vero anche che alcuni calciatori dell'Italia sono sopravvalutati, e non mi riferisco solo al fatto, ovvio, che siamo meno forti di Francia o Spagna, ma che alcuni che sulla carta sono buoni non lo sono affatto, soprattutto tra i difensori, ma che magari sono valutati top ingiustamente magari perchè giocano circondati da altri forti che li coprono. L'errore di Bastoni contro la Bosnia è da calcio parrocchiale, ed essendo napoletano non mi appassiona la storia blocco Juve o Inter, non è che tutti quelli dell'Inter sono scarsi o viceversa. Allora valutiamoli per quello che sono e quelli che hanno ripetutamente fallito, tranne Donnarumma e pochi altri, via, mai più convocati, spazio ai giovani, spazio a gente nuova (che c'è).

P.S. chi dice che abbiamo vinto Euro 2020 a fortuna non capisce nulla di calcio. L'Italia veniva da 34 partite senza sconfitte e giocò un girone degli europei da paura, ricordo come ieri che tutti i giornali dicevano che era stata la squadra a giocare meglio. dai quarti in poi ha sofferto come tutte le squadre ma ha strameritato se non di vincere quantomeno di arrivare tra le prime. E stiamo parlando di 5 anni fa, ragazzi, non di 40 anni fa. Quindi basta con discorsi retorici sul fatto che non si producono talenti e via dicendo, è vero, ma soltanto in parte, sono stati commessi errori enormi da parte della Figc e di un sistema che non vuole cambiare. Magari stavolta è la volta buona. E voi siete d'accordo?
