Things my brain refuses to memorize

It's only natural that you don't remember irrelevant details. But if you try hard enough, you should be able to, right?

One thing that keeps happening to me is that I open the cutlery drawer and can't tell the difference between spoons and forks (you only see the lower part). I don't know which is which until I take one out.

Each time that happens, I think it would be useful to memorize which is which. I come up with a mnemonic device, such as "spoons and knives never go together; separate them with forks" or "forks and knives are used most frequently; put them on the left and right." But then, the next time I forget which mnemonic I chose.

I'm not usually clumsy, but I have to laugh at the fact that I can't manage it. Is my wife gaslighting me by swapping things? No, just kidding. My brain simply refuses to memorize that, even though I know it will annoy me next time.
