Okay, so this is my story. I’m currently on day 9 of dealing with this and trying to understand what happened.
I already have some pre-existing allergies (dust mites, hay fever, cats), but otherwise I had been tolerating supplements very well for months.
For about 2.5 months, I had been taking:
400mg magnesium glycinate nightly
400mg L-theanine nightly
I never had any issues with that combination. In fact, it helped me relax and sleep better.
At some point I ran out of my usual magnesium glycinate, so I bought a different magnesium supplement instead. Around the same time, I also decided to try NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) 600mg for the first time ever.
Timeline
April 27 – around 3 PM I took:
NAC 600mg (first time ever)
About an hour later I noticed a very clear effect: my thoughts became much quieter and calmer.
April 27 – evening Before bed I took:
200mg L-theanine
1 tablet of the new magnesium supplement
The new magnesium tablet contained:
Magnesium Bisglycinate: 66.7mg
Magnesium Taurate: 33.3mg
L-Glycine: 50mg
L-Taurine: 50mg
Vitamin B6 (P5P): 0.5mg
So compared to what I had been taking before, I suddenly introduced:
NAC for the first time
a different magnesium form
taurine
extra glycine
P5P/B6
The next morning I woke up feeling extremely dizzy and drowsy, almost like a drunk sensation. Very heavy/lightheaded feeling in my head.
Because of that, I immediately stopped ALL supplements that same day.
What happened afterwards
The intense spinning sensation mostly improved, but the lightheaded feeling remained. Since then I’ve continued feeling:
lightheaded / “floaty” in the head
off-balance
occasional shortness of breath (although this may partly be anxiety)
My doctor checked my blood pressure on the first day and it was normal.
My main question
Could this simply be a temporary nervous system / neurotransmitter imbalance from suddenly changing supplements and introducing NAC all at once?
Again:
I tolerated 400mg magnesium glycinate + 400mg theanine for months without problems.
The only thing that changed was:
switching to a different magnesium formula
adding NAC 600mg for the first time
Since the symptoms started, I stopped everything immediately. Yet now, 9 days later, I still feel lightheaded.
I’m wondering whether the sudden switch may have temporarily disrupted something neurologically or neurochemically, and whether it simply takes time for the nervous system to stabilize again.
My concerns/questions
Does this sound more like a nervous system reaction or something else?
Could 1 pil of NAC trigger something like this in sensitive people?
Could the combination simply have been “too much” for my system at once?
Can a reaction like this cause permanent issues, or is that unlikely?
Has anyone experienced prolonged dizziness/lightheadedness after NAC or changing magnesium supplements?
At this point I honestly don’t know whether:
this was caused mainly by the NAC,
the sudden supplement switch,
or some temporary imbalance that just needs time to settle.
Any thoughts or similar experiences would really help. Thanks in advance.
