I’ve been helping out with outreach for a small Roblox project that’s planning to run a series of “experiments” — short, focused sessions where players interact with unusual or evolving mechanics.

It got me thinking about something I don’t see discussed that often:

What actually makes people stay engaged with something that isn’t fully polished or even “complete”?

Is it:

  • The core mechanic being immediately interesting?
  • A sense of progression, even in rough form?
  • Feeling like your feedback actually changes things?
  • Or just the novelty of trying something different?

From what I’ve seen, projects like this tend to go one of two ways:

  • they lose players quickly
  • or they build a small but really dedicated group

So I guess the bigger question is: what actually drives retention in that kind of environment?

If you’ve played or tested early-stage / experimental games before (Roblox or otherwise), what made you stick around—or leave?
