Getting my curls back after thyroid cancer! The difference a good cut makes
Two bouts of thyroid cancer completely wrecked my texture and overall hair health. I didn’t do chemo, but the cancer itself made a lot of my hair break or fall out, and I was too exhausted to go for proper haircuts so I’d just keep it tied back and chop the ends off with kitchen scissors when it got too long to keep up with washing. I thought I’d never see my curls again, but after working with an amazing stylist, they’re back and better than they’ve ever been :-)
A big priority for me has been keeping my routine as low maintenance as possible, since I have chronic fatigue and lingering muscular weakness in my arms that makes holding them up for styling difficult. My stylist kept this in mind with the cut.
Routine:
- BEING’s 2B anti-frizz shampoo and 1A volumising conditioner, lathered and rinsed once each in warm water
- The above photo was taken after I lightly diffused at the roots for a few minutes, then scrunched it a bit with damp hands and left it to air dry the rest of the way. Often I just air dry fully though, depending on my energy levels
- I used a bit of Lush’s sea salt spray for texture here, but I also really like Biosense’s AMP It Up styling powder. Regardless of which I use, I apply a bit at the roots and massage it in then run any excess through the rest of my hair as I fluff it up with my fingers
