Hey guys,

I’m currently in the process of building a new PC (RTX 5080 + Ryzen 9 X3D CPU) and I’m also looking for a new monitor. I’ve decided on the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDP (32", 4K, 240Hz).

The monitor has DisplayPort 1.4 (DSC) and HDMI 2.1, but no DP 2.1.

I’m trying to figure out what the best way to connect it is and which cable I should buy.

Most discussions I find are 1–2 years old, so I wanted to ask what the current situation is in 2026.

From what I understand, both DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 will use DSC at 4K 240Hz, so in theory the image quality should be identical. However, I’m unsure which one is actually more stable in practice on modern GPUs and monitors:

  • Is DisplayPort still the better option for PC gaming (G-Sync, stability, VRR behaviour)?
  • Or has HDMI 2.1 become just as reliable on modern NVIDIA GPUs?
  • Are there still any known issues like flickering, black screens, or VRR quirks with either connection?

I’m mainly interested in:

  • stability (no flicker / signal drops)
  • VRR performance
  • overall “plug and play” experience

I know both will likely rely on DSC anyway, so I’m not concerned about theoretical bandwidth differences — more about real-world behaviour today with newer GPUs and OLED monitors.

Thanks in advance for any recent experience or advice.
