XMP unstable on MSI Z790 + i7-14700K — RAM crashes unless set to 4800MHz

Hey everyone,

I’m having a really annoying stability problem with my RAM and I can’t figure out what’s causing it.

Specs:

  • MSI Z790 Gaming Plus WiFi
  • Intel i7-14700K
  • RTX 3070
  • Corsair Vengeance DDR5 32GB 6000MHz CL36 (XMP / EXPO kit)

The issue:

Whenever I turn on XMP in the BIOS to run the RAM at 6000MHz, my PC starts crashing sooner or later:

  • Crashes when launching games
  • Sometimes even when going back into Windows
  • Basically unstable in general under any load

What I’ve tried:

  • XMP at 6000 → crashes
  • 5600 → still crashes
  • 5200 → still crashes
  • Only stable at default 4800MHz

I also tried manually changing RAM voltages (DRAM voltage / VDD / VDDQ), but it didn’t really help.

Question:

Any idea what could be causing this?

Is it:

  • The CPU memory controller on the 14700K?
  • A BIOS issue on this board?
  • Bad RAM kit?
  • Something wrong with my settings?

Would really appreciate any help or similar experiences 👍
