Looking for a specific material like dark-tinted dura-lar or trace paper
TL;DR: Looking for material recs for a dark-tinted translucent material to print on, such as black tracing paper, black dura-lar, black mylar, etc.
Hi all,
I figured this community might know a good answer for this. Long story short, I'm legally blind and a printmaker. I can still see a little bit, but only images with white lines on a dark page, which I have incorporated into my printmaking aesthetic.
Lately, I've been wanting to make more layered drawings and prints. Something where I can draw a layer, and then overlay a second translucent sheet to make that layer recede backwards. I used to use dura-lar, tracing paper, frosted mylar, etc. for this, but I can only seem to find these materials in a white tone. I exclusively use black paper with white ink, paint markers, etc. because this is what I see best. So the typical frosted mylar doesn't work because each layer I add lightens my black paper until I can't see the image.
So what I'm looking for is a version of frosted mylar that works on black paper, something that tints the layer underneath instead of brightening it. I've found a few translucent black papers for things like wedding invitations, but they don't seem quite see-through enough for what i'm after, and I've also though of using something like the film you use to tint car-windows, but the surface is too glossy and it reflects light into the image which is a no-go for my eyes. I'm willing to try it if it's the only option, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of a dark film that might be workable for this. Ideally i'd like something that comes in different levels of opacity so I can test which works best for me, but I'm also open to doing multiple layers of something with a very light tint.
Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.
cheers!
