I’ve been thinking about something in Thai GL and wanted to see what others think.
Why do most Thai GL shows use Western-style (white dress) weddings for the main couples?
I’m not against Western weddings at all—people can obviously choose whatever they want in real life. But from a storytelling perspective, it feels a bit limiting that we mostly see only that version.
Especially because:
- Thai shows do show culturally rooted weddings for heterosexual couples
- And same-sex marriage is now legal in Thailand
So it made me wonder why that same cultural representation isn’t reflected as much in GL.
Wouldn’t showing more culturally rooted elements make the story feel more grounded and unique?
Especially since Thai GL is already in Thai language with subtitles—clearly global audiences are open to cultural context
Personally, I feel like:
- It would make the scenes more meaningful
- Add authenticity
- And honestly, traditional attire would elevate the visuals a lot
Also, I’ve noticed fans already love when actresses wear traditional looks, so I don’t think audiences would be confused or put off at all.
I’m not saying replace Western weddings completely—just that it would be nice to see more variety or even hybrid weddings.
