Recently, my band director randomly came up to me and asked me to teach a freshman violin player (I'll refer to them as S (for student)) how to play euphonium. It is worth noting that S was with my BD when they asked (I didn't feel as if I could refuse, that was a mistake and I can't go back on my word now). I'm a sophmore as well as the only euphonium at my school. This is not my job, I'm still learning myself, and I've never had to teach someone how to play before. My BD has not offered assistance since. The only thing he's explicitly told me to do is "go through the blue book" (pictured above). Since then, it came to light that S wants to join band (specifically marching band, on euph, of course) next year and my BD is moving schools. Now I have to bring a string player to an appropriate playing ability on a wind instrument, without the support of a band director. I've been using the instruction book available in the band room (pictured above) as per my BD's instructions, but I find that it assumes a basic ability to play (something S lacks, as they're a string player with no prior wind experience, which isn't their fault). I have decided to continue teaching them until the end of the school year, but after that, they're on their own. For the time being, I'm teaching at the best of my ability, which quite frankly isn't enough for them to grow and improve. Does anyone have tips, either for teaching or what comes next?
