We recently needed to replace our blower motor in our 2 year old furnace. The new one is quite a bit louder and the tech mentioned we have higher than preferable static pressure. This was a little frustrating since it's the same company that did the original install and apparently didn't bother to fix it at that time. In any event, our furnace is in the utility room in the finished basement. There are currently no returns in the basement and it seems like it would be a pretty simple DIY to add a return in the bedroom that's maybe 5 feet from the return trunk in the utility room.

Using my (not always so) trusty AI assistant, I think I've got a pretty good grasp of what it would take to do the install and it all seems very doable. My only open question - Gemini is recommending using a starter collar with a scoop and placing the scoop facing "up" so it will be catching the return air. Catching the air makes sense to me if I was adding a vent, but for a return it feels like it will just be forcing air out rather than pulling into the return.

Can anyone confirm the orientation of the scoop for a return?

Thank you!
