What do you guys do when people tell you to “calm down”

Just had an argument with my partners brother and his family. He was basically going on about how people with ADHD shouldn’t get extensions at university since they are given “plenty of time to do it.” Me and my partner were trying to explain that medical professionals made that decision because ADHD directly impacts our ability to focus and time manage. He wasn’t having it and kept going so I eventually told him (in an almost yell) that that was insulting (because he wasn’t getting it the sly way).

Then his mother chimed in, said it wasn’t an insult and told us to calm down, which proceeded into a full blown argument because like we were insulted and you can’t tell us we weren’t.

Anyway, I often loose control over my emotions when this happens. I was wandering if anyone has figured out what to do in this situation because I’m really over embarrassing myself.
