I wanted to learn sewing, and after watching a lot of videos about what sewing machine to buy, I decided to follow the common advice of getting an older used machine first to see if I even enjoy sewing at all.
I found this old Privileg machine in a local listing. I took it apart, cleaned and oiled it at home, and now it works great (at least I think so). Of course, my stitches and seams still look pretty rough, but I believe that just comes down to practice and improving my skills over time.
Still, I started wondering: is there actually a big difference between old and new sewing machines? In most areas of technology, newer usually means better — but is that true for sewing machines too?
When I say “new machine,” I mean modern entry-level models in the €200–250 price range.
From what I understand, most sewing is done with a simple straight stitch anyway. Am I overthinking this? Because if that’s the case, then if I keep improving at sewing, maybe it would make more sense to focus on buying an overlock/serger instead of replacing the machine itself.
I’d really appreciate your opinions and advice!
