New top - what do I like?

The response to my last post was so lovely, I decided to share my new project ♥️

i made this top, following the shape of an other one I made.

I like:

-the overall concept

-the proportions

-the french seams I used

-bias binding on the neck and hemline

I'm not so happy with:

- the wiggly armholes, just not done well

- the button loops are a bit to big and the top one cozld be a bit higher, so the corners don't fold over

- I decided to cut the neckline a bit lower and ended up with SO MUCH loose fabric. I don't fully understand why or how that happens. Anyway, the fabric had to go somewhere, so I made those two darts from the neckline to the princess seams. I like the angular look on the neckline but it kinda ruins the neat look of the princess seams.

The very first thing I made

i borrowed my mom's sowing machine today and made this out of an old bedsheet. it's not perfect. none of the seams are straight and my thread broke quite a few times but o cannot belive I made something that resembles clothing on the first try.

My first success so far

this is actually my second attempt at making this baby goose comforter. I aim to gift it to my nephew this weekend.

I was too ashamed to show my first attempt to anyone and it was a very humbling experience. this time around I took more time with pressing, adjusting stitch lengths, etc. my eureka moment was when I changed my sewing machine foot from a universal one to a narrow one - since I'm more used to practicing on bigger, straighter pieces of fabric it didn't occur to me beforehand that changing the foot may help with curves!

for anyone interested, I got the pattern off Etsy (Tiny Sewing Company).

it still isn't perfect (especially in the neck area) but I see the improvement ✨ the photo makes it seem like the wings differ much, but it's just the photo angle 🤭

The best toy I've ever gotten!

A few weeks ago I asked if this machine would be able to handle any batting at all and I was told this machine is a toy and I'd be lucky if I was be able to stitch anything with it. I got it as a donation so I spent $0 on it, I wasn't expecting it to be an amazing, heavy duty machine or anything lol.

I was determined to try anyway just to be sure if I'd need to buy a proper machine right away or if I can wait a few more weeks. Today was finally that day and I'm as impressed as you might be. It did, in fact, handle batting pretty well!!!

I got this 100g/meter batting at the sewing store today and made this kindle sleeve using scrap fabric. I don't even plan on using it for myself, it's not even properly done, I just wanted to test my machine. The Elgin brand is well rated in my country so it does make sense that it worked.

My plan for now is use this machine to practice my skills for a few weeks before I save enough money to buy a new one. I currently have 4 options but I believe I'll go with a Janome 2008s, it's pretty basic but it is within my budget. The Brother CE7700 and CS6000 and the Janome 1050DC are in my radar as well but it's only if I can save a little more money than I'm expecting to.

And a disclaimer: most toy machines are just toys that can't even handle a single layer of batting, I'm well aware of that. I just wanted to give an update about my specific machine and show the sub that sometimes we can find a pretty cheap and basic machine that can handle light sewing. I was very lucky to get this one for free bc otherwise I'd never bite the bullet and spend over R$1.000 on a sewing machine without knowing if I'd even like sewing lol

This beast scares me

I’m petite and tired of my work scrubs not fitting correctly. Tired of taking them to get altered and paying an arm and leg, yet they don’t come up how I want. So, I procured 2 sewing machines from the thrift store for a total of 40 bucks. First one is an 80’s Brother that I’ve been teaching myself on. For curious about this one and set it up for a test run. WOW. Now I understand what people mean when they say “they don’t make them like that anymore.”

So, there she is. 10 bucks well spent, I believe. Any input or advice welcome!!

Inheriting this machine, what supplies do I need to keep on hand?

My grandmother recently passed, and she was a lifelong sewer. There were two entire rooms full of everything you could ever possibly need to sew, quilt, crochet, or do any kind of crafts. My great great grandmothers singer, great grandmas domestic rotary, and grandmas nelco were among the items. I’ve decided I’m only going to keep this one since it was used daily and what she used to teach me when I was young. Unfortunately I just don’t have the space to keep everything, so what are things I need to keep to have a complete kit but not a whole room full? Obviously threads and needles for this machine, an assortment of fabric, a fabric slicer, pins, zippers, binding, buttons..? Anything particular that you always run out of? I don’t want to throw everything to the curb and realize I needed certain things and now have to hunt down a Joann Fabric (which are extinct in my area)

Gift ideas for a beginner?

My manager at work has recently helped me through a seriously rough patch and I want to buy her something as a thanks, she has made myself and my partner bookmarks before which I still use now, is there anything you’d recommend? Vouchers for reputable fabric stores (UK), or something else? I haven’t got the faintest clue about sewing

Buying a Sewing Machine

Hey yall, I want to buy a sewing machine to take in dresses and hem pants and denim. I'm looking at secondhand machines but I'm out of my depth😅. I've found a Singer 5805 for $60 Canadian, but I'm not sure if it's a good deal.

should I bite the bullet and just buy the machine? I'm a complete beginner and want something affordable and reliable. I would have no idea on how to repair if anything goes wrong.

Tips for Creating this piece?

I wanted to recreate this top, not the bottom.

My idea was to purchase a white bra then add rhinestone embellishments with glue. I’m not sure what the draping fabric is called? I would sew that fabric along the bottom of the bra. For the halter neck detail, I feel like that can be a long piece of fabric that’s sewed to the top then I’d tie it around my neck.

If anyone has other ideas or suggestions, please let me know! I am a complete newb to sewing

Help: How to and ideas for project

I'd like to sew the sleeves, from the multi hotdog t-shirt onto the white one, to give a double layered oversized look. Should I fold the to sleeves like pictured, cut and shorten it or something completely different? I'm also unsure how to go about this. I'm also thinking about, making a new top out of the, then sleeveless, multi hotdog t-shirt.

Note: Shirts are two different sizes and fits - Sleeves are smaller on the multi hotdog t-shirt, though it's a size XXL and the white one a S.

I'm open for suggestions, ideas and any help at all (I'm a beginner at sewing, obviously)!

Thanks!

My sewing machine won't do a zig zag stitch - brother Ix3817g

hello! I'm fairly new to sewing, however I mostly sew on paper making journals, with occasional fabrics (from thin fabric to thicker fabric)

I recently had trouble with my brothers timing, the top thread wasn't catching on the bobbin so I watched enough YouTube videos that I figured out how to adjust the timing, and it worked great for about a month...

however now it will not make a zigzag stitch. the straight stitching is perfect, I don't see any of the top thread on the bottom and vise versa... but no matter what I do I can't get a zigzag stitch to work on anything... fabric of paper.

I've watched a few videos and seen on other machines that you can adjust the needle bar via a small screw once you take the cover off... is that true for my brother also?

anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this problem?

also, what needle would you use if you were to sew paper? would it be a different needle if I was just selling like regular copy paper and as opposed to cardstock or does that matter?

Tension Right?

hello im new sewing and im trying to figure out if the tension is right. I think I've got it close as far as I can tell as it seems on the last 4 or so stitches show about and equal dot visibility and depth. first photo is the top and the second is the bottom. thanks

Stitching Recommendations on faux fur

Hi! I’m sewing a faux fur design on a stretch fabric - I’m making a top.

I used ek130 on the backing of faux fur to add more stretch.

I want to hand stitch but I’m not sure what’s the best stitching for this project. Also, let me know if I was smart to use ek130 or if it would help anyways to avoid it warping when it’s worn,

TIA

What would you do?

I received these pants that do not fit me in length and I’m not particularly fond of the fraying at the top. I LOOVE the color of the corduroy. I’m Looking for ideas on what you would you make out of them with the fabric? Sorry I should have pressed them before taking the picture.

What type of dress pattern should I follow to make this.

Is it possible for a complete beginner to make this dress in a year? I tried to find a pattern but couldn't. Does anyone have a pattern for this dress.Im planning to make this and wear it to my sister's wedding.

need help drafting a pattern from scratch

i am trying to make a top for a party that looks like the red one in the main photo, but i can’t for the life of me figure out how to draft a pattern that would drape in that mock-wrap twisty sort of way. any ideas for what the geometry of that main body front panel would look like, or how to derive it from a regular v neck ?

appreciated so much :)
