Hi, I’ve been building a mattress and torn between two options. The first is a little softer than I would’ve preferred in a store, but I do sleep pretty well on it, let’s call it “medium”. The problem is I’ve developed a bit of back pain, but it’s not when I wake up, it’s usually later in the afternoon so I’m not sure if it’s from the mattress or something else (I have lost hours at work and have been less active than usual).

Let’s call the second option “medium-firm” and it’s exactly what I expected in terms of firmness, but I don’t seem to sleep quite as deep on it. Back pain seems about the same.

Also I’m losing weight, which makes me lean toward the softer mattress as that’s supposed to be better for lighter weight people.

So which should I choose, the medium or medium-firm? I think a big issue for me mentally is I used to travel for work and have slept on a lot of hotel mattress, and had a couple nights where a soft bed left me completely hunched over the next day. So when I first got the medium mattress, it being softer than I’d imagined made me nervous the second I started to get that twinge in my back.
