My debit card has absolutely no bank transaction fees, and a decent exchange rate, so I usually get money from ATMs. But in Thailand there was a big fee on every ATM I could find. I don't mind a small fee, but in Thailand it was actually cheaper to exchange the cash I happened to have. So I want to check if I should bring cash or not to Taiwan.

I have to pay for the first hotel in cash and arrive in the middle of the night, I assume that at least in the airport ATM would be cheaper than an exchange counter. But is it the same outside the airport? (If I brought cash it would be in yen which I can extract with no fee and a normal exchange rate, but my bank is in AUD).
