Hi everyone, I am a hobby writer and I am looking for general feedback on my prose. Overall, I want to know whether my writing feels mature and polished, or whether it leans more towards the amateur end of the spectrum. Apart from sentence structure, I’d also appreciate if you could comment on the “show not tell” nature of the writing.

Thank you!

I really like writing. And I believe I have good ideas to write about (I can say this because I’ve noticed my friends are often hooked till the end of my short stories for the plot and mostly have good things to say about the reading experience). But I know that my writing is mediocre. For example, one feedback I have gotten is that my writing is more expository and less narrative. It also lacks the show-don’t-tell elements.

How do I get better at writing? Is it just a practice thing, or do I need to think a bit differently as I write? Would love to know your inputs on any guidance. I know everyone has their own writing style, but I want my writing to read less like a movie script and more like an elegant novel which captures emotions, characters, and compel my readers to ponder.

P.S. I have increased my frequency of reading to absorb more mature texts.
