I'm considering a VOIP number in order to have a secondary business phone number on my actual mobile phone, connected via SIP. I was looking at using voip.ms for this.

I don't want my name and address tied to the VOIP number so that anyone could get my name/address/other personal identifying information just from the phone number alone.

Is there anything I should know about this before I sign up?

Thanks!

I need to run some fiber between two buildings in underground conduit. I'll need about 200 feet or so of fiber.

The first building has an unmanaged PoE switch in it with an SFP port. I'm wanting to future proof for 10G speeds, but I don't need more than 1G for the moment.

Initially, I was trying to determine if I could pair SFP with SFP+ at each end and see if they'd auto-negotiate to 1G speeds.

I can't even find SFP transceivers outside of Amazon though. They're cheap enough at this price point, and I can't find a SFP+ PoE switch without spending a lot more money than I'd otherwise need to spend. So now I'm thinking I just go with the cheap Amazon SFP transceivers and when the time comes to upgrade to 10G hopefully things will be cheaper on the switch side of things there.

The only other option I can find is using a media converter to convert SFP+ to ethernet and then just using a cheaper, non-fiber, non-PoE switch for 10G needs.

Would the following work out:

Fiber Cable: https://www.fs.com/products/12018.html?attribute=843&id=3975113

  • OM3
  • LC UPC to LC UPC
  • Cable Diameter 1.6mm
  • OFNR riser jacket
  • A Tx to B Rx?

SFP+ Transceiver: https://www.fs.com/products/74668.html?attribute=71428&id=4912594

~~* Generic Compatible 10GBASE-SR SFP+ 850nm 300m DOM Duplex LC/UPC MMF Optical Transceiver Module

  • 300m on OM3
  • 850nm~~

SFP Transceiver:

https://www.amazon.com/1000Base-SX-GLC-SX-MMD-GLC-SX-MM-MA-SFP-1GB-SX-S-85DLC05D/dp/B08BP3JDBV

  • 10Gtek 1.25G SFP 1000Base-SX
  • 850nm
  • duplex LC
  • Not explicitly LC UPC

Connected to a generic cheap PoE switch which I can't find the original listing for at both ends, which has an SFP port or two.

The fiber cable would be buried in conduit, but I might have to get creative to protect one end from direct sunlight/weather. Would all of the above work out?

  1. I can't find a better cable jacket intended for outdoors from fs.com without removing a lot of other options
  2. Does the cable diameter matter at all? If price is all the same (which it seems to be for most diameters), I'd probably rather get a smaller diameter cable to make any future shenanigans pulling cable through the conduit easier.
  3. Does Tx to Rx pattern matter at all so long as I'm consistent with it? Is it kinda like ethernet's T-568A and T-568B, where B is much more standard/common for general use over A?
  4. I've seemingly read good things about these 10Gtek transceivers, and they're reputable enough for cheap generic networking/electronics in other fields. Any potential for issues with them here?
  5. If/When I want to upgrade in the future to 10G, it's as simple as changing out the transceivers to SFP+ (and any accompanying switches, things unrelated to the fiber, etc), right?
  6. Any general advice or guidance here? What would you do differently for connecting two buildings together at roughly 200 feet or so of cable run? Thanks!

I'm in need of a second phone number for calls and texts on my phone. I have a degoogled phone, and I am concerned about compatibility without Google services. Particularly, I am concerned for a lack of receiving texts and calls in a timely manner without the app being in the foreground due to a lack of push notifications and background app activity (thanks to Google's battery policies).

My options are to go dual sim (which will eat into battery life, but less so if I pay more to stay on the same network as my main service), or to look into some, "virtual" phone number service similar to SIP and VOIP phone services.

Does anyone have good service recommendations that will actually work on a degoogled phone?

I have been under the impression that this isn't likely to be something I could find, but someone insisted otherwise to me recently. A quick search of F-Droid shows a few VOIP related apps but it's unclear if this is exactly what I'm looking for or not, as features seem to vary wildly. Linphone looks to be the closest, and it seems to be supported by VOIP.ms (a popular VOIP carrier) but it says it works in the background using push notifications, thus demonstrating my exact point of concern.

Thanks!
