new pharmacy tech trainee + starting healthcare program in the fall
hey guys! i’m an almost 23 year old student and i’ve began the process of onboarding with walgreens after getting an offer for a $16.50/hour pharmacy cashier / tech trainee (registered with board). i receive my schedule in a few days. i was curious if anyone has advice for someone who will be balancing a healthcare program (radiology) starting in august while also working at the pharmacy! granted, this is somewhat of a specific question and i’ll know much more about my store and the workloads once i start, but i did want to see if anyone has input on being in a healthcare program not pharmacy-related while working in pharmacy. for context i don’t have any pharmacy experience and my only healthcare job was being a caregiver for young adults with special needs for a few years.
i am aiming to work full-time once i begin and have spoken to my manager about moving to 20 hours once school starts in the fall as it will take up 20 hours per week (however eventually, i will have to leave once i begin clinicals next summer as it will be 40 hours of school, this she doesn’t know) and she is more than willing to work with me! since my goal for working here isn’t necessarily a foot in the door for pharmacy but healthcare itself, i want to know if it’s worth having this be the workplace i stay in until i have to leave for full-time school.
i’ve been looking for jobs that have a chance of pay increase or tips (have tried dispensaries, restaurants, etc) so i can start really saving to move out of my parents at some point during my two year program, but landed here since it’s the healthcare field and it feels like an appropriate fit. i do want to work towards a PTCB certification since the process with walgreens is very helpful and the pay would get better. again, i know it’s more of a case by case or store by store basis on workloads and how employees feel about their job, but if anyone has any tips or suggestions i would appreciate it!
