I am pulling items off a belt onto a depot. The depot is above chutes that go down a few blocks. At the bottom of the chutes I have a funnel into a barrel. If I give the funnel a redstone signal it stops putting items into the barrel. But the blocks stack up on top of the funnel.

How do I stop the vertical flow of items? I was hoping the items would backup in the tunnel and wait until there was space. Will the items back up if the barrel is full? Can I stop the items from being pulled out of the depot? I put a funnel under the depot and it would not pull the items out.
