Tax refund claim denied - I never applied for one.

this is a what do I do kind of post. I will seek help from an accountant but it just happened tonight and I'm desperate for an explanation.

So I'm going for a run, and think I'll open my mail box on the way out. This is Wednesday evening. there's a big brown envelope from HMRC. I'm a teacher so I get shafted at source so I have minimal letters from HMRC.

I open it and the following is what I find. I don't know what to make of it. please give me your opinions and like I said, I will go see an actual accountant tomorrow to ask him what it is.

  1. a letter from HMRC saying tax refunds claims from the year 22 to 25 have been denied as the forms have not been filled in correctly.

  2. a copy of the incorrectly completed forms. it is from a trust account in the name of my father in law's letting business. he has named my son who is 8, as the beneficiary of the trust.

  3. my wife's signature is on some of the documents signed in 24 and 25 but she claims she doesn't know anything about it.

  4. a copy of the correspondence from an accountant my father in law used to contact HMRC and say they/he/the trust/my son???? had paid too much tax and they are applying for a refund.

what on earth is any of this? what should I do?

Im asking from a financial point of view. because from a moral point of view, the fact that he used my sons details to set up a financial whatever it is, without consulting me or my wife(apparently) , potentially forged her signatures etc I will be dealing with him myself.
