Bad unit?
Hi, i just recently bought a Sony SLV-N51 HIFI VCR on ebay. After getting it, i saw that the whole plastic enclosure was probably heat affected at some point, looks like someone left it on a damn stove or cranked up a hair dryer to 11 and went to town. After cleaning the audio head and video heads on the drum, it plays a tape alright, but quickly drops the video after going to static, all the while the audio is very quiet, and behind a wall of whistling static noise. I want to know what could have caused this, common sense would say something bad happened relating to heat, and messed up the components, like capacitors or something. Im a newb when it comes to electronics repair, but i know a few things and could handle something like soldering new components on a board. I just want to know what could cause this. Also its not a tracking issue i dont believe, tracking buttons dont do anything really and for most of the tape it tracks fine and the picture is as clear as its gonna get. Also its not just the tapes, ive tried 5 different movies, pre-recorded ones. Thanks for the advice ahead of time.
