Vaazha 2 opinion

Why are the girls in Vaazha 2 fair-skinned while the lead boys are dark-skinned? Where is the representation there? It feels like male leads are accepted regardless of their skin tone, but female leads are still expected to be fair.

I appreciated many aspects in Vaazha 2, especially the portrayal of the Muslim community, but when it comes to female representation and colourism, I feel we still have a long way to go.

Thank you for all your opinions. I am a Malayali and I’m not trying to compare Malayalam and Tamil cinema here. Malayalam cinema is known for breaking stereotypes and portraying real people. To be clear, the young women in this film were fabulous and talented and I’m in no way discrediting them. When young men watch these films they often see themselves and feel validated by them — why can’t women have that too? That’s all I’m asking. I’m not saying to cast a dark skinned female as a tick box exercise, but a talented dark skinned female who deserves to be seen and celebrated. Imagine Malayalam cinema doing this and the the kind of appreciation it would receive. That’s all folks !
