Last month my friend received a prank SMS from a number he didn’t recognise. I checked WhatsApp at the time to see if a name would be attached — no account existed. Today I received a notification on WhatsApp saying “XYZ number is new to WhatsApp” from that same number (via a new chat thread on WhatsApp). Screenshot attached.
What could have caused this?
Could it be that WhatsApp flagged that I’d attempted to search the number previously and is now letting me know they’ve joined? Only flaw in that theory is my friend also attempted to search the number on WhatsApp a few weeks ago, but didn’t get the notification today.
Could the pranker have my number saved, thus a notification got sent to me when they joined WhatsApp?
Any theories? Thanks!
