I’m currently in the process of trying some new meds because the side effects of my previous meds (quetiapine) were really bothering me and I felt like I should share some of the advice I wish my younger self had and also would love some advice from others as I go through this trial and error of new meds!
- Do not feel like you need to be easy or not a bother. You deserve the time and attention of your psychiatrist. Don’t just say something is fine when it’s not voice your concerns.
- If something is bothering you at a low dose and isn’t a temporary side effect but a long term one. It won’t stop bothering you. You might be able to learn to live with it but also consider do you want to.
- If they say weight gain is a side effect don’t brush it off if you think that will bother you.
- Do your research but also talk to your psychiatrist as number one. Most time people complain about something online is when something is wrong and there’s a million and two people who are doing fine on a drug. It’s better to talk to your psychiatrist about concerns you have.
- Fine the right psychiatrist. This can be difficult hell I know but if you don’t feel like your psychiatrist is helpful try to find another.
- Write down your questions for your doctor. You can then not forget and just say yeah everything is fine when they ask if you have questions if you’re like me and in the moment forget.
Anyway those are maybe things I wish I knew the first time around would love to hear what other advice people have!
