[US] I am in the state of Illinois, and a coworker of mine has routinely been badmouthing me to management, and starting conversations that are intentionally not appropriate for work.
I knew what was going on, because a manager has been sharing details with me for months now about what this guy has been saying about me. It was never a problem, because I let him hang himself by lying about my work. I took before and after pictures of my work, documented issues and difficulties I had with tasks as they came, along with timestamps. Basically I made sure to cover my ass once i heard of it.
Ultimately there was nothing I could do about someone's opinions of me, so i let the bad mouthing slide for the most part and allowed my work to speak for itself.
I realized what was going on after I was working with the manipulator as a duo for the day, and he brought up how his part time job causes him to frequently interact with black people. He then went on a tangent about how "There is a difference between a black person and a n****r" and other racist remarks directed towards black people.
This man is the foster parent of a black child, i know because he tells everyone at work about it. so I remained silent after he made that initial comment. I knew something was up, because me and this guy are not friends. It goes without saying I find it uncomfortable as hell and to deal with this at work. On top of his numerous attempts to try and knock me as a worker, I am ready to put my guns up and declare war on this guy.
Obviously it's a policy violation what he said (there's more but off the top of my head can't remember).
However, I have no witness and am going to look like a moron after walking into HR and trying to make the case that the father of a black foster child was flinging the N word around. I essentially have no case. I am worried I could start a war that could backfire on me, as this guy has shown to be a manipulator.
How easy would it be for this POS to say to HR "Why would I ever say that about black people? I am fostering a black child.". Keep in mind, he didn't choose his foster child. He told me he had marked no preference on the race..
What is my best course of action? How would I protect myself with HR against someone trying to destroy my career in this way?
I feel like knowing very key details about his personal life shows that this guy has over shared about his personal life, and gives me ground to stand on. No? I have no idea how to approach this
