House of Leaves Difficulty

So I just bought a copy of House of Leaves, and I am just curious about the difficulty of the read. The most difficult book I have read is The Silmarilion and I had to have maps, family trees, and other resources to make sure I understood everything that was happening. Is it something similar to that, where I need to take notes and have some sort of preparation for it, or is it more of a purposeful confusion to dissorient the reader?

Thanks!

So I made the switch about a month and a half ago because I can't hold onto picks anymore due to neuropathy in the fingers. I have been playing for around 20 years, and everything is going ok as far as the switch goes. I'm learning a lot of my already known material slowly but surely. My main problem is when I try to play anything with a few quick notes in succession using PMI or just PI, my thumb is always grazing against the string above it ( example: playing the G and grazing against the D), which makes it ring out. No matter how I adjust my hand or my thumb, I can't get it to go away. I was wondering if there is a certain technique I should be working on to help this go away, or if this is just something par for the course in terms of learning this new method? I also do not have fingernails, and I'm not using a thumb pick.

Thanks!
